Contra, New York 2016
Jeremiah Stone and Fabian von Hauske opened Contra in late 2013 on a relatively untraveled stretch of Orchard Street. Since its inception, the restaurant's been receiving great acclaim for its bold ambitions to create a restaurant with a unique New York identity. Following its success, the pair has opened the wine bar Wildair just next door.
The restaurant truly makes the most of its narrow space. In the front is a bar and all the way in the back is the small open kitchen.
The energy is hipp and trendy, but still casual. Our server and sommelier gives a fantastic first impression. He notices we're natural wine geeks and insists on finding us a wine we haven't tried before and that we'll enjoy based on our preferences. He selects Savagnin Brutal (from L'Octavin) – a truly delicious wine!
Contra serves a set 5-course menu with optional bread and cheese (do not miss the bread as it's a true gem!). The dishes rolls out of the kitchen in a perfect pace, tastes great and are interesting enough to get us excited for the next dishes to come.
We had a great time at Contra. Fantastic staff, great atmosphere and great food. Don't miss this place if you're in New York!
